What Is COVID-19?

Symptoms

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory
illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those with underlying
medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer
are more likely to develop serious illness.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, dry cough, fatigue, other less
common symptoms include loss of taste or smell, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis (also known as
red eyes), sore throat, headache, muscle or joint pain, skin rash, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea,
chills or dizziness.

Symptoms of severe COVID-19 include shortness of breath, loss of appetite, confusion,
persistent pain or pressure in the chest, high temperature.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19
virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by
washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose
when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory
etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

Protecting Yourself

Stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask,
especially when distancing cannot be maintained, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding
crowds and close contact, regularly cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or
tissue. Check local advice where you live and work. Do it all!
